The difference between knowing and understanding can be summed up in one word DOING.
Doing is the cure to bridge the gap from knowing to understanding.
What is this knowing-doing gap that effects 100% of all companies and their employees, coaches and their athletes results?
It is a very simple concept to become aware, but easily misunderstood. It is reported that corporations spend over 6 billion dollars in a year helping employees know more. But this hardly translates into an increase in effectiveness.
Now, let's think. The company is nothing without its employees. So why is it that companies spend so much money on the company but not the employees personal development (ie mindset). DISCLAMIER => The Humans mind is said to be made up of two parts 5-7% Conscious & 93-95% Unconscious, this is super important to understand.
1. KNOWING: Knowing comes from the intellectual part of our mind: The Conscious Mind ( 5-7% of our mind ) This is where we have been conditioned to live our lives by. Knowing or Knowledge will usually be the starting point of our growth. An everyday example of this is adults who attend college, uni or employees who receive training, individuals listening to podcasts, smashing YouTube clips and FB Videos, listening and only knowing, YET missing the important part of understanding, which is the doing. knowledge in itself is just a part of the solution. This is where the second aspect comes in…..
2. UNDERSTANDING or Doing comes from the Unconscious Mind. This is where a persons habits, beliefs, and emotions are held, pathways constructed and repeated. It is actually this part of the mind that controls the doing. It is said that having all the knowledge in the world is of no use, if nothing is ‘done’ from that knowledge.
We all have those people in our lives that KNOW everything. They are Fucken annoying to say the least “oh I know, yeah yeah that’s right I KNOOOOOW” they may know stuff they have heard, regurgitated from a podcast YouTube clip or socials, yet they don’t understand the concept or idea, as they are missing the DOING. This is as simple as speaking the language or writing with your dominant hand. These are habits that were developed throughout time. However, a discrepancy has been observed between KNOWING and DOING. Take the example of always writing with your dominate hand. When you go to write with you non dominate hand you know how to but doing it becomes really frustrating.
We also know that a tomato is a fruit as it has seeds, yet we don’t put it in a fruit salad.
The more we know the less we do until we start to understand "the knowing-doing gap" and how to bridge it.
DOING OR ACTION Is the cure. If you want to learn something, have a goal, a vision for understanding and change then it’s in the HABITS, Rituals, behaviours, and decisions you do repeatedly that bridges the gap. As they say in the boxing game Drills and skills pay the bills, sets and reps get the cheques.
Keep the doing going until you understand things at a deep neurological level both consciously and unconsciously. Create a system or process to repeatedly do things.
More doing, less just knowing.
